Last Tuesday, Henry Richter, in company with several others who were searching for John Burns, who had been missing for several days, found his body frozen in the ice just a short distance below Bloom's Landing.
About a month ago his mind became deranged and while in that state, he tried to take the life of George Emes, who is employed by Henry Richter. A few weeks ago his friends missed him and started to search for him. His wife, who is an invalid and has been staying with her son south of Alton was summoned, and she, in company with her son, broke open his door and found $1 and his best clothes, and as he could not be found she returned with her son. He was traced across the river and part of the way back to where his body was found. He was almost beyond recognition only that he always wore his hair long and around his shoulders, and this was the only means to identify him. It is thought that in a fit of insanity, he began wandering and fell through the ice and being unable to get out, he froze and in this way met his death. [04 Mar 1902]
