Drowned - Last Wednesday, August Bleisner, Jr.,
who resides in this county, six miles north of Grafton, was
drowned while attempting to cross the ford at Barnett’s Mill, on
Otter Creek, in a wagon drawn by two mules. The mules were also
drowned. The creek had suddenly become swollen from recent
trains, but Bleisner wishing to get home, and being deceived
about the depth of the creek, drove in and had got near the
opposite shore when the hind wheel of the wagon struck a log,
and the mules became unmanageable. Bleisner sprang from the
wagon and succeeded in reaching the shore. Seeing the mules
struggling in the water, he returned to them and attempted to
cut the harness. The current was very swift, and gradually bore
the team downstream. Bleisner was a tolerably good swimmer, but
becoming benumbed with cold, suddenly sank beneath the water and
was drowned. This occurred about 4 o’clock in the afternoon. His
body remained in the water until the next day at 3 o’clock. It
was found lodged upon a log in the creek some four hundred yards
below the ford. [Jersey County Democrat 06 Mar 1869]
