KANE KRONICLES -- BIRTH -- Born to Sam Rhoads and wife, on
Monday, March 28, a boy.
-- BIRTH -- Boy at home of Fred Brooks, of recent date.
CARROLLTON -- OBITUARY -- William Ward died in the insane
hospital at Jacksonville, Sunday and the remains were brought
for interment, Monday. The funeral was from family residence
Tuesday afternoon and the interment under the direction of M. W.
A., of which order deceased was a member. Mr. Ward was formerly
one of the leading attorneys of this county, having practiced at
Greenfield a number of years previous to his locating here about
five years ago. Deceased leaves a widow and two daughters. The
daughters are Mrs. Chas. Keeley, of Pittsfield, and Miss Jessie,
who alone is at home to comfort her bereaved mother.
RICHWOODS (Bluffdale twsp.) -- DEATH -- Died, Wednesday, March
23, Joe Gadwith, aged 19 years, at the home of his grandmother,
Mrs. Bowie, at Carrollton.
RUBICON -- DEATH --E. Lynch received a telegram Tuesday
announcing the death of Wesley Combs, of Upper Alton. Mr. Lynch
and son, Fred, went down on the afternoon train. Mr. Combs spent
his vacation with Mr. Lynch last summer and while here made many
friends.
ROCKBRIDGE -- OBITUARY -- Effie, 15 year old daughter of John
and Elizabeth Woolridge, departed this life Monday night, March
14, after an illness of three weeks. Effie was one of the
converts of the revival held last month by the Baptist, a member
of our Sunday school class, always present when health
permitted, not having missed a day until her fatal illness. She
died in the hope of life eternal beyond the sorrows of earth.
Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church under the
auspices of Elder B. E. Antrobus in the prescence of an immence
throng, Wednesday at 10 a. m. Remains were laid to rest in
Taylor cemetery. The parents and relatives have the sympathy of
the community.
PACIFIC UNION -- BIRTH -- William Schroder and wife are the
proud possessor of a baby girl since last week.
CITY CHATTER - Miss Lina Shirley is critically ill in St.
Louis with pneumonia.
-- J. M. Coons, of Jacksonville, visited Rev. B. F. Drake and
family Wednesday of last week.
-- Miss Mary Brooks went to Auburn, Thursday to visit J. Albert
Brooks and family for an indefinite time.
-- Mrs. M. A. Staats returned from a visit with her sister, Mrs.
L. A. Brewster, Jerseyville, last week.
-- We received a copy of the Skagway, Alaska, News, Wednesday,
bearing date of March 18, from C. W. Dossell. Also posters of
the packers who were to convey him to White Pass Summit.
-- The REGISTER received a pair of Jackrabbit ears Wednesday
sent by Clay Sitton from Richhill, Missouri. He states that he
knocked the rabbit down with a frozen clod and the dogs which
were in pursuit captured it.

spent Sunday with his cousin, Miss Lucie Miner.
KANE - Harry V. Maxwell, of Bardolph, is visiting his brother,
W. Kee Maxwell, of the TELEGRAM.
-- Mrs. Jacob Pope spent Saturday with her granddaughter, Mrs.
Ed. Weeks, Alton.
MT. ZION MATTERS -- Mrs. David Jackson and Leslie visited J. E.
Jackson at Nilwood first of last week.
-- Mr. and Mrs. Otto Atteberry visited the former's aunt, Mrs.
Solomon, at Chesterfield, Saturday & Sunday.
-- H. N. Powar and wife, Lewis Canatsy, John Standefer and Chas.
Powar started for Sheridan, Oregon, Tuesday of last week where
they will make their future home.
-- Mrs. Malinda Neighbors visited her daughter, Mrs. Hinkle, at
Scottville last week.
HIGH STREET -- Mr. Jasper McNealy, Misses Call Painter, and
Nellie Jones visited Mrs. McNeeley's relatives in Morgan Co.

RUBICON -- Ed Trabue and wife visited his brother, Benjamin, in
Macoupin Co. last week.
BERDAN - Claude Bell visited home folks near Barr, Sunday.
-- DEATH --Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Clifford came up from Alton Tuesday
night to attend the funeral of their brother-in-law, Rate
McFarland, who died at his home near Haypress.
RICHWOODS (Bluffdale twsp.) Mrs. Dabb's brother from Jersey
county visited her a few days last week.
-- Dr. Stephen Flatt and Rev. Henry Byland went to Chicago,
Friday, to see the latter's brother, John Byland, who is
attending school.
FAYETTE -- Mrs. Eliza Robinson, of Lancaster, Ky., is visiting
her brother, J. Hiatt and family.
-- Miss Hattie Smith returned to her home in Texas after a few
weeks visit here with her brother, R. E. L. Smith.
CITY CHATTER -- Wm. West went to Monmouth to work.
-- O. H. Fischer, Beardstown, was home Sunday.
-- H. B. Swan's family removed to Ripley, Wednesday.
-- Mrs. A. Fischer is entertaining her sister, Mrs. Heller,
Chicago.
-- A. E. Mytinger left Wednesday of last week for Ottumwa, Iowa.
-- Joseph Englands family will remove to Louisiania, Missouri,
this week.
-- Mrs. G. W. Smith and children, Carbondale, were visiting her
parents last week.
-- Harry Couchman went to Jacksonville to accept a collectorship
for the Singer Sewing Machine Co. last week.
-- Misses Mattie and Anna Woodington, Winchester, are visiting
their brother, J. T. Woodington, and family.
-- J. W. Chipchase and daughter, Edith, Jacksonville, visited
Mrs. Adams and family from Saturday until Monday.
-- Misses Mabel Andrews, Minnie Richert and Charles Williams,
students of Knox College, Galesburg, who were home last week,
returned Monday.
-- Harry V. Maxwell, publisher of the Bardolph News, called
Saturday afternoon. He also visited his former neighbors, Rev.
W. H. Cooper and family.
-- Mrs. Minnie Noble, of Harriman, Tennessee and Mrs. T. J.
Baldwin are visiting Mrs. Zeno Stocks.
-- F. D. Worcester, wife and two sons arrived Tuesday from
Ledgerwood, North Dakota, to visit his mother, Mrs. Lana
Worcester, and family. We are glad to see Frank back again and
to learn of his prosperity in the northwest.
-- J. M. Pierce recieved a very interesting letter from C. W.
Dossell, on the 30th ult., written at Skagway, Alaska, on the
19th. He describes the town of 8000 in the woods and speaks of
his company's decision to go over
the White instead of the Chilcoot Pass.
MT. ZION MATTERS -- OBITUARY -- This vicinity has been
saddened by the death of Mrs. Mary S. Brown. She was born in
Macoupin county, May 16, 1834; was married to Enoch Brown, Feb.
10, 1834. (NOTE - One of the above dates is wrong. GBK) To this
union 3 children were born, two boys and a girl. The girl and
one boy preceded her to the grave at the ages of about three
years. She professed religion in 1855 in a meeting conducted by
Elders Johnson and Mitchell and joined the Mt. Zion Baptist
church. She lived a true and devoted christian, often expessing
the hope of meeting loved ones beyond; was a good mother, a kind
neighbor, ever ready to lend a helping hand in time of need. She
has reared and partly reared quite a number of orphans. For the
past year and a half she has suffered from a cancer on her neck
which she bore patiently until 9:20 o'clock Thursday, March 24,
when death came to her relief. The funeral took place from the
Mt. Zion church at one o'clock Friday, conducted by Rev. Carey
Fitrzjarrell, after which her remains were laid at rest in
Scottville west cemetery. A husband, one son, three brothers and
three sisters survive.
BERDAN -- OBITUARY -- James Johnson departed this life at his
home in Belltown, Mon. morning, April 4, and the remains laid to
rest in the
Belltown cemetery, Tuesday at three o'clock p. m. Deceased
leaves wife, one child, two brothers and three sisters to mourn
his loss.
CITY CHATTER -- DEATH -- J. H. Fox was called to Belltown,
Wednesday of last week to take charge of the remains of Otis
McFarland, who departed this life the previous day, aged 21
years.
-- DEATH --Dr. A. W. Foreman recieved a telephone message
Tuesday announcing the death of his half brother, Nathan P.
Foreman, near Detroit, Pike county, aged 72 to 73 years. He
states that a twin brother of deceased, David Foreman, survives
and is a fine specimen of physical manhood, well preserved for
one of his years.
-- OBITUARY -- Philip E. McFarland departed this life at his
home near Haypress, Tuesday, April 5, at 8:10 o'clock a. m.,
aged 56 years, 4 months, and 14 days. The funeral took place
from the Belltown church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and
the interment in the Belltown cemetery. Deceased was twice
married. His first wife was Miss Mattie, daughter of F. M. Bell,
to whom was born three children, one of whom, Fred survives. His
second wife was Miss Jane Ogle, who with one son & three
daughters, mourn his death. Mr. McFarland was born near
Farmington, in St. Francis county, Mo. and came to Belltown
about the year 1867, since which time he has followed his trade
of blacksmithing at that place, in this city with his brother,
H. L. Mcfarland, and other places. He was a stout man, a good
workman and had many friends among aquaintances whose sincere
sympathy is with the bereaved wife and helpless little ones.
Seven to ten years ago he fell off a tank wagon at Carrollton
fair and was run over, which is thought to be the cause of the
attack of lung fever siezing upon his vitals six weeks ago and
finally terminated his earthly career. Rev. W. H. Cooper
conducted the funeral assisted by singers from this city.

BRIDGEWATER -- BIRTH -- A son was born to John M. Collins and
wife April 5.
-- BIRTH -- A girl to Mr. and Mrs. George Price on April 7th.
-- BIRTH -- A son to Hardin Fields and wife on April 10.
BERDAN -- OBITUARY -- John Meister was found dead near his home
about 5 oclock p. m. Thursday, April 7th. As usual early in the
evening he took his basket and went to a corn crib a short
distance from the house, he had filled the basket with corn &
started for the feed lot when death seized him. His body was
discovered by his mother who saw a drove of chickens
congregating around the corn basket and went out to scare them
away and found him on the oposite side of the fence cold in
death. Deceased was a batchlor about fifty years of age and
lived with his aged parents. The funeral was conducted by Rev.
R. M. Smith of Jersey county at he home of the deceased's
brother, Jacob Meister, at one oclock p.m. Saturday after which
the remains were taken to Hickory Grove for
interment.

-- OBITUARY -- Esther Alexander was born at Gilead, Calhoun
county, Ill., April 30, 1832, removed with her parents, Chas and
Diana Crampton, to Schuyler county when this subject was but six
months old. Died at 5:30 a. m. April 9, 1898 at the residence of
Henry Davis, her son-in-law, five miles northwest of Versailles.
She united in marriage with S. W. Withrow in 1850. To this union
nine children were born, namely: Calvin, Wm. I., Malissa S, wife
of M. E. Robbins; Mary D., wife of George D. Turner; Chas. C.,
Oscar, Genevra, Nora, wife of Henry Davis, and Samuel. Calvin
and Samuel died in infancy, Malissa, Genevra and her husband
have also preceded her to the tomb. She early in life united
with the Baptist church and remained an earnest, firm and devout
Christian until death. Energy, honesty and frugailty were
characteristics of her life. Singleness of life,
straight-forwardness in dealing and conduct made her for a host
of friends. She was loved by her friends, honored, loved and
respected by her children. The world is made better by her
having lived in it. Society is the only loser by her death. She
bore her fatal illness, which ended in terible suffering, with
most heroic fortitude, being patient, uncomplaining and
conscious to the last. Pleuro-pneumonia was the cause of her
death, living but four days after a relapse. She was left a
widow in 1872, was married again in 1875. The second marriage
did not prove a blessing.

-- OBITUARY -- Miss Anna Otto, aged 19 years, daughter of
Charles Otto, residing near Walnut Grove, in Linder town,
committed sucide on Sunday afternoon, April 3, while in a state
of mental aberration, by swallowing carbolic acid. Coroner James
Squire, on Monday, empaneled a jury & held an inquest on the
remains. Robt. Hardcastle, W. L. Kincaid, J. B. Barnett, Thos.
Lanham, H. P. VanArsdale and A. T. Secor composed the jury.
After hearing testimony, the jury returned a verdict of suicide.
The unfortunate girl left a letter, written a short time before
takeing the fatal dose, in which she gave reasons for her rash
act.
CITY CHATTER -- DEATH -- C. C. Withrow went to his mother's near
Versailles on the 6th inst. in response to notification by
telegram of her serious illness. Her obituary appears in this
issue.

KANE KRONICLES -- DEATH -- Miss Delia Varble, a young lady,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Varble, residing six miles
northwest departed this life at 3 a.m., Sunday, of congestion.
ELDRED -- BIRTH -- Born, to Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Everett, a
bouncing boy on April 17. Mother and son doing well.
-- BIRTH -- girl born to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Camerer, April 17.
CARROLLTON - OBITUARY -- Dennis Vaughn died at his home on east
Main, Saturday morning after an illness of but a few days. The
funeral was from St. John's Catholic church, Monday morning.
Deceased was a prominent citizen, who leaves a widow and four
children, besides several relatives and a host of friends to
mourn his sudden departure.

city, departed this life at Denison, Texas, Sunday, April 17,
age 86 years. Left here about a year ago.

-- Miss Nannie McFarland, of Denver, Colorado, is visiting with

-- William Sinclair and Walter Kelley two brave veterans of the
late war, departed Tuesday night for Alaska, where it is hoped
they will be blessed with success in their search for the yellow
metal. The former expects to return in October but the latter is
undecided.
WHITE HALL -- Mr. & Mrs. J. H. Brown, who were here some time
ago, from Fort Madison, Iowa, to look at our city with the view
to buying the furnishings in and lease on Hotel Stocks, owned by
Miss N. L. and Mrs. H. H. Hocking, have returned and on Tuesday
closed the deal and will take possession Monday.
CITY CHATTER - R. T. Clark visited a sick uncle at Milton,
Monday.
-- Miss Jessie Griswold returned to school at Godfrey,
Wednesday.
-- C. E. Dickson, Jacksonville, visited his mother and family
Wednesday.

-- F. D. Whiting, a traveling salesman, spent Sunday with his
wife, who is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. Watson, in
this city.
-- Mr. and Mrs. David Hutchinson, who spent the winter at their
home at Eustis, Flordia, returned here Thursday morning hale and
hearty.
-- The Jersey county Democrat says that Lt. Charles Bridges, who
graduated from West Point Military Academy last year, and has
been stationed at Fort Thomas, Ky., since last September, has
been permanently assigned to the 22nd regiment and ordered to
Fort Crook, Nebraska. Charley is a former Whitehall boy.
BERDAN - Miss Lang of St. Louis spent Sunday with her mother,
Mrs. M. Doolin.
-- DEATH -- V. C. Heaton attended the funeral of his sister,
Mrs. J. D. Biggs in Jacksonville last week.
-- Mrs. Alfred Houghton, Jacksonville is visiting her mother,
Mrs. Dan Meister this week.
APPLE CREEK PRAIRIE - Miss Laura McFadden, of Time, visited her
sister, Mrs. L. E. Husted, last week.

ELDRED -- BIRTH -- Born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Russell, April
18, a bouncing boy.
-- DEATH -- The body of Mrs. Florence Varner was brought here
from Calhoun county, Sunday of last week and was interred in the
Maberry cemetery.
-- BIRTH -- Lee Hennel says there is nothing like having plenty
of soldiers if the United States has to fight Spain, and I have
a pair of twin boys at my house since the 20th.
WRIGHTSVILLE -- DEATH -- Richard Phibbs, of Greenfield, died
Sunday and was buried Tuesday at 2 o'clock by the Grand Army in
Hickory Grove cemetery.
BRIDGEWATER -- BIRTH -- A baby girl at S. J. Riggs' Friday
night.
-- OBITUARY -- Mrs. Ida Cox, wife of Massy Cox, Jr., died Sunday
about 1 o'clock p. m. and was buried Monday at the Likely
cemetery. Deceased was about 19 years old and was married to
Massy Cox Jr., about two years ago. She leaves a six months' old
baby and a young husband to mourn her loss.
CARROLLTON - Miss Georgia Robinson is visiting relatives in
Jacksonville.
-- Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Mormon, of Missouri, are visiting relatives
here.
-- Miss Emily Hardin went to Jacksonville, Tuesday morning to
visit with Miss Mabel Potts for a few days.
-- Hugh Bushnell came in from Oklahoma, Thursday of last week to
make the many friends of his old home a visit.
PACIFIC UNION -- Mr. and Mrs. Donald Buie are entertaining Miss
Buie, of St. Louis.
ELDRED - Miss Levety Crosby, of Calhoun county, is staying with
her sister, Mrs. R. G. Emert.
-- The body of Mrs. Florence Varner was brought here from
Calhoun county, Sunday of last week and was interred in the
Maberry cemetery.
MT. ZION MATTERS - Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hawkins gave their
nephew, Frank, a party Tuesday evening. Frank started for Texas,
Wednesday.
-- Chas. Powar and Lewis Canatsey arrived from Oregon, Saturday.
They were not very well pleased with that part of the world.
-- Samuel Arthur, formerly of this county, now of California,
writes that he has found the land of sunshine and flowers, and
his roving is at an end. He has a job on a street car line at 20
cents per hour.
WRIGHTSVILLE - Miss Eva Ruyle, of Beatrice, Nebraska, and who is
attending school at Shurtleff, visited Mrs. W. D. Waltrip,
Sunday.
CITY CHATTER -- E. G. Todd, who was employed at Monmouth,
returned Monday to remain.
-- J. O. Vosseller, of Jacksonville National Bank, visited his
father, G. S. Vosseller, and family, Sunday.
-- Morris E. Brown is temporarily employed at D. Crawford &
Co.'s, St. Louis. He has the promise of a permanent situation
June 1.
-- John Langley wrote J. H. Graves fron Mintern, Arkansas, on
the 25th of April stating that he is well pleased with the
country and had planted 20 acres each of corn and peas.
-- P. W. Jackson removed from Lynnville to 826 N. Diamond St.,
Jacksonville.
-- J. C. Carpenter, of Oxville, arrived here Tuesday night and
left Wednesday morning to stake out telephone lines to Berdan,
Wrightsville and Greenfield. He is marking the location of poles
which are to be put in at once.
-- Rev. W. H. Cooper, pastor of the Presbyterian church, has
resigned to take charge of a church at Good Hope, in McDonough
county.
WALKERVILLE - Dr. Adams, Tennessee, is here with the intention
of locating.
-- Mrs. Gus Howard is entertaining her mother, Mrs. Surbeck of
Calhoun County, this week.
APPLE CREEK PRAIRIE - Mrs. G. W. Curtis and children, of
Stockton, visited Mesdames F. D. Moulton and Thos. Giller, last
week.

LORTONS PRAIRIE -- OBITUARY -- A two year old son of James
Wade died Thursday of last week after a week's illness, having
the croup. The funeral was conducted at the house by Rev. B. F.
Drake, after which the remains were laid to rest in the White
Hall cemetery. The people of the Prairie extend their sympathy
to the bereaved family.

-- OBITUARY -- The death messenger has called from our presence
a warm friend, a loving wife and a kind mother. Mrs. Jane
Ferguson-Stinnett, residing four miles north of Wrightsville,
departed this life at 61 years of age, Sunday morning, May 1,
1898. Deceased was born in 1837 and was reared in the vicinity
in which she died. In 1856 she was united in marriage to Mr.
James Stinnett; to this union were born six children, four boys
and two girls, namely: Moss, James, Charles, and William: Eunice
and Bertha, all of whom together with the husband survive her
and deeply mourn her loss, but their loss is her eternal gain.
Mrs. Stinnett united with the Christian church at Union in 1858,
where she has been a faithful member ever since. Funeral
services were conducted by Elder H. A. Orchard of Roodhouse,
after which the remains were laid to rest in the Union cemetery.
CITY CHATTER -- DEATH -- A. P. Taylor received Monday an account
of the killing of Miss Anna McCulley of Ludlow, Mo., by a
runaway team Sunday afternoon. She was 19 years old and a cousin
of Mrs. A. P. Taylor, deceased.
-- DEATH -- A. B. Reeve and other relatives here were notified
by telegram of the death of W. D. Deatherage, in Jacksonville,
Tuesday. He was engaged in merchandizing a short time here and
was well known by many citizens. Deceased was 55 years old and a
brother of Mrs. George Staples of this city.

visited relatives here Sunday.
-- Chas. M. Raffety, of St. Louis, spent Sunday with his cousin,
Thomas J. Raffety.

-- Miss Mattie Wilson, of Carlinville, came over Tuesday to see
her sister, Mrs. Virgil Wilson, who is still in poor health.
-- Miss Delia Foley went to Winchester, Monday, to act as
stenographer for the regular term of the Scott county court.
-- Mrs. J. B. Hayes gave a reception to a large number of her
lady friends Thursday afternoon in honor of her guest, Mrs. J.
B. Swartz, of St. Louis.
-- Mrs. Wm. Sinclair and Mrs. Mattie Severs and son, Clair, are
preparing to leave for Portland, Oregon, where they expect to
make their home. Mr. Sinclair found profitable employment there
on his way to Klondike and decided to go no farther. Hence their
departure to join him.
BETHEL BREEZES - Miss Jessie Allen, of Lorton's Prairie, went to
Chicago, Friday to remain indefinitely.

-- Mrs. C. I. Taylor, Carrollton, Missouri, arrived Thursday
morning to visit Jesse C. Hubbard, southwest of city, and other
relatives.
-- Rev. E. L. Wendell, of Summer Hill, is home for a visit. He
has been soldiering at Springfield, but was denied the privilege
of enlistment to fight for the freedom of Cuba.
-- Mr. and Mrs. Wm. H. Benear called Tuesday morning to renew
Register subscription and send it a year each to Mrs. H. C.
Wilkinson, Mountian Grove, Missouri, and Mrs. M. J. Hanks,
Parkland, Oklahoma.
-- A. P. Taylor received Monday an account of the killing of

city, Sunday, May 8, after a lingering illiness of several
weeks. The funeral was from the Christian church, Tuesday at 2
p.m. conducted by Rev. J. E. Artz.

Wolfley has taken the gaurdianship of little Josie White. It is
hoped by all that she will do a good part by her.

-- OBITUARY -- DEATH OF MRS. LAURA B. MANN - Laura Bowman was
born in Cass county, Missouri, Aug. 1, 1860. Came to Greene
county when quite young with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.
Bowman, who resided for some years on Highstreet. She was united
in marriage to B. F. Mann, July 14, 1878, at her Highstreet
home, near where they resided until October 1, 1897, when they
removed to Carrollton. Prior to this date her health was
failing. The decline was rapid for several weeks preceding her
death and the end came at five p. m. Sunday, May, 8, her age
being 37 years, 9 months and 7 days. The funeral took place from
the Christian church in Carrollton, Tuesday afternoon, May 10,
at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. J. E. Artz of Carrollton, and
burial in the Carrollton cemetery. A husband and six children
mourn the loss of companion and mother. The children are Ernest
L., Myra G., Benj. F., Lillian, Abbie and Howard l., aged 7 to
17 years.
CITY CHATTER -- DEATH -- Mrs. W. E. Hopkins returned home from
Carydon, Ind., Wednesday evening, where she went four weeks ago
to see her father, Laban Brown, who died Tuesday morning of last
week
-- BIRTH -- A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Nevius,
Tuesday.
ROCKBRIDGE -- OBITUARY -- Joseph Elkinton, son of Mr. and Mrs.
J. Elkingon, was born in Greene county, April 2, 1835. He was
married to Anna Nix, Jan. 23, 1858. Eight children, four sons &
four daughters, were born unto them. He was a consistent member
of the Baptist church of this place. He participated in the
civil war and remained true and loyal to his country. He had
been in very poor health for some time and although his last
illness was painful, he patiently waited for the last moments to
come. He died at 9:45 o'clock, Wednesday night, May 4, 1898,
aged 62 years, 1 month and 2 days. Funeral services were held in
the Baptist church, conducted by Rev. B. E. Antrobus, of
Manchester. Remains were interred in the Tayler cemetery.

CARROLLTON -- DEATH -- Patrick Driscol, the aged inmate of
the County house, who inflicted serious woonds on Mr. Winters,
with a hatchet last week and stabbed himself afterwards, died
Monday.
-- OBITUARY --George W. Marmon who was formerly a citizen of
this place died at his home in Chicago, Saturday, May 14, 1898,
aged 44 years, 7 months, 9 aays. His remains were brought here
for interment and the funeral was conducted by R. J. Church from
the residence of his mother, Mrs. Jerusha Marmon, Monday, May
16, at 2 o'clock P. M.
-- OBITUARY -- James O'Donnel, aged about 21 years, died at his
home in this city Saturday morning after suffering but a few
weeks with consumption. The funeral services were from the St.
John's Catholic Church and interment Sunday afternoon at South
cemetery. "Jimmie" as he
was familialry known, had a host of friends who mourn his
untimely death. (NOTE - His stone is in St. Johns cemetery.)

life at his home near Felter, at 1:15 p.m., Friday, May 6, 1898,
aged 42 years, 6 months & 7 days. He was married to Miss Rachel

grandsons and one granddaughter, besides his father, mother,
five brothers, and two sisters and many other kindred survive
him. His funeral took place from Mt. Zion Baptist church,
Saturday at two o'clock, May 7, conducted by Rev. Jno.
Bracewell, where the remains were laid to rest in the church

and Mrs. Decatur Beeman recently.

member of Co. H., 91st Illinois, aged 80 to 90 years, departed
this life six miles northeast of this city Saturday night, June
4, and was buried in the Jones cemetry next day. He claimed to
be a relative of Abraham Lincoln.
-- OBITUARY -- On May 28, 1898, little Fannie Fern, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Chas. H. Springgate, aged one year and 9 months,
died at their home in St. Louis of meningitis after a few hours
of intense suffering. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. B.
F. Drake, assisted by the Duncan sisters, at the home of Mrs. J.
J. Wilkinson, grandmother of deceased, of this city, on Monday,
May 30, at 2 p. m., after which the remains were taken to the
Roodhouse cemetery for burial.

WRIGHTSVILLE -- DEATH -- Elder A. J. Wright and wife went to
Kane to attend the funeral of Elder Bush, Monday.
MT. ZION MATTERS -- BIRTH -- A son arrived at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. J. F. Hicks, June 5, 1898.
KANE KRONICLES -- OBITUARY -- Rev. J. W. Bush, after a very
short illness, died at his home, Saturday at 10 o'clock a. m.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. M. Rhoads, Upper
Alton, in the Baptist church Monday at ten o'clock. There was no
sermon preached but about 20 ministers were in attendance and
each one made a short talk and spoke in highest terms of Rev.
Bush's christian and ministerial life. His remains were interred
in the Fidelity cemetery. His bereaved family have the
heart-felt sympathy of the community. Our beautiful church so
nearly completed, is now bereft of its much loved pastor.
HIGH STREET -- BIRTH -- Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Nickols are the proud
parents of a girl.
MT. ZION MATTERS -- W. A. and H. O. Magee started for
Oklahoma, Wednesday.
-- E. O. Turner and wife, Scottville, visited at Enoch Brown's

-- Alden Hicks returned Friday from a five months stay in

with old friends, Monday.
-- Miss Mame Parker, who spent the winter at Trenton, New
Jersey, has been spending a week here with friends and

Mrs. Theo. Jones and Mrs. H. G. Ellis, who visited with Mr. and

RICHWOODS -- (Bluffdale township) -- Miss Lizzie Andrews is
entertaining her cousin, Miss Roxie Wood, of Colorado, this
week.
-- John Byland is home on a short visit. He recently graduated
from a business college in Chicago.

ELDRED -- OBITUARY -- Died, June 9, at his home in Eldred,
John Boothly, of consumption. The deceased was born in Pike
county, Illinois, in 1863 and was married in 1890 to Mrs. Rhoda
Gregra. Five children blessed this union, of which only two,
with the wife survive the husband. Mr. Boothly was a patient
suffer for three years. Although not a member of any church, he
expressed himself as having made his peace with God. Funeral
services were conducted by Rev. Greenlee of Carrollton at the
school house, Friday, June 10, and the remains were interred in
Eldred cemetery.
PAGE 4, COL. 3 -- OBITUARY -- Isaac T. Allen was born in Greene
county, Ill., July 18, 1830 and married Priscilla I. Roberts,
August 11, 1850. By this union 14 children were born, eight
girls and six boys, 11 of whom are living. Brother Allen made a
profession of religion at Patterson in the year 1847 & united
with the church at that place, remaining a dovoted Christian
until death. Being afflicted so much in the latter part of his
life, he was not permitted to attend church very much. Deceased
was afflicted more or less for 35 years and was confined to his
bed for 18 months. During all of this time & intense suffering
he was cheerful and patient. He would call for singing and
sometimes would join in himself, clapping his feeble hands and
praising the Lord. At one time when he could not speak he raised
his hand toward heaven to let us know that would be his home. He
did not fail to give his wife and children the very best advice
and ask them to meet him in heaven. He was a kind and good
husband and father. The funeral sermon was preached by Elder T.
N. Marsh, of Upper Alton, from the text, "Father I will that
those whom thou hast given me be with me where I am." John XVII,
24. There was a large attendance of relatives, friends and
neighbors. At the close of the sermon, Elder I. Roberts, in
fulfillment of a promise made to deceased, made a very
appropriate talk after which the interment took place in the
Martin cemetery.
-- OBITUARY -- Mrs. Elizabeth Jane Fanning departed this life at
her home on Carson street, June 21, at 11:15 o'clock a. m., aged
69 years, 4 months, and 3 days. The funeral, conducted by Elder
H. A. Orchard, took place from the residence at 2 p. m. Wed.,
after which the remains were laid at rest in the Whitehall
cemetery. Her husband, son, G. R. Fanning and a number of other
children survive. She was a good woman and the bereaved family
have the sympathy of neighbors and friends in their sorrow.
PLEASANT DALE -- OBITUARY -- Death has once more visited our
neighborhood and taken from us Wilson D. Wood. Mr. Wood was born
on the old William Wood farm, 7 miles west of Whitehall, May 14,
1862, being the eighth child of William and Sarah Wood. He was
married to Julia Cannedy of Carrollton, March 27, 1889. Three
children blessed this union. William Curtis was born Feb. 18,
1890 and died March 8, 1891. Lula Estella was born April 30,
1892 and Walter Carol was born Jan. 10, 1894. Wilson Wood
departed this life Saturday, June 11, 1898. He owned and resided
on the old Wood farm all of his life. He was a quiet and
industrious citizen, esteemed by his acquaintances. The funeral
services were held at the house, Monday, June 15, conducted by
Rev. J. W. Harnly, assisted by M. Owings, Irvin Green, Misses
Laura and Birdie Duncan, singers from the Whitehall Baptist
choir and Prof. F. V. Felder, pianist, after which the remains
were laid to rest in the Wood cemetery. We extend our sympathy
to the bereaved wife and little children.
PACIFIC UNION -- BIRTH -- A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs.
Wm. Crayne recently.
BRIDGEWATER -- OBITUARY -- Died of Pleuro-Pneumonia at 11:25 p.
m. Friday, June 17, after an illness of 15 days, Mrs. Wm. Young.
Rosa Belle Crow was born July 22, 1863, married to John Miller
of Pearl, Illinois, in Sept. 1878, who was drowned in the
Illinos river on Aug. 28, 1887. Mrs. Miller was married to Wm.
Young of Bridgewater, April 5, 1891. She leaves five children,
Alta, now Mrs. J. C. Bridgewater and Elmer L., by her first
husbvand, and Grace Evalend, Diana Belle and Merie, aged seven
months, by her last. The funeral services were conducted by Rev.
J. W. Smith from the house at 5:30 p. m., June 18, after which
the remains were laid to rest in Hunnicutt cemetery. The
pall-bearers were Geo. Paire, Frank Staats, T. C. Boyde, Jas.
Harford and Fred Staats. Mrs. Young will be mourned by a large
circle of friends. She was regarded as a model wife, mother and
neighbor & enjoyed the esteem & friendship of all who knew her.
Her death leaves vacant a place in the home and neighborhood
that no other can fill.
BERDAN -- BIRTH -- Mr. and Mrs. Albert Howerton are rejoicing
over the arrival of a boy at their home Saturday.
CARROLLTON -- Miss Nettie Moore, Carthage, Missouri, is
visiting her sister, Mrs. F. C. Smock.
-- Miss Flora Bushnell, spent Saturday and Sunday with her
sister, in Kampsville.
-- Mrs. Vena Sanderson-Ramsey, of St. Louis, is visiting Mr. and
Mrs. T. C. Hussey.
-- Miss Mazie Fishback, of Ft. Smith, Arkansas, daughter of
ex-Governor, Wm. Fishback, came Saturday to spend the summer
with Mrs. Vertrees and other relatives.
ELDRED -- Mrs. Samuel Bishop, of Kampsville, visited with Mrs.
John Voiles, last week.
-- Mrs. Henry Bechdoldt has gone to Hardin to visit her father
who is very sick.
-- Miss Veda Crossly, of Calhoun county, is visiting her sister,
Mrs. Dick Emeret, and family.
-- George Woodman, who recently returned from California, was
married Thursday, June 9, to Miss Anna Fasnacht of Carrollton.
The happy couple will leave in a short time for the far West
where they will make their future home.
CITY CHATTER -- Miss Helen Cary, a daughter of Dr. Cary,
Pittsfield, is visiting Miss Bertha Foreman.
-- Henry Nabstedt, who has been employed in Dossel's jewelry
store, left Monday night for Davenport, Iowa.
-- Miss Della Summerville; St.Louis, came Tuesday to take the
position of Stenographer at the Fire Clay Works.
-- Mrs. C. H. Pierce, Pheonix, Arizona arrived Saturday to spend
the summer with her father, H. W. Starkey.
-- Mrs. H. C. Rose, left Tuesday morning for Kalkaska, Michigan,
to reside with her husband, who will meet her in Chicago.
-- Mrs. S. A. Holt, Indianapolis, Ind., arrived Wednesday of
last week to look after her Whitehall interest.
-- Mrs. A. B. Gregory and son, St. Louis, greeted a number of
their friends at the depot Monday while the train waited.
-- Mrs. Gilbert Christian, of LaFayette, Indiana, arrived Monday
evening to visit her father, Lewis McClure and family for a few
weeks.
-- A. E. Mytinger wrote his father, F. M. Mytinger, from Keokuk,
Iowa, on the 20th that he had joined Co. "E" of the 50th Iowa
volunteers and was on his way to Jacksonville, Fla.
-- Edward Simpson, wife and two children arrived here from Mena,
southwestern Arkansas, Friday of last week. They went from
Jersey county there eight months ago and say they are glad to
get back her again.
-- Mrs. Lange got a letter from her husband, A. F. Lange on the
81 inst. written June 2 at Lake Linderman. He was in good health
and the boats of his party were in readiness to depart for
Dawson City a distance of 600 miles the way they had to travel.
MT. ZION MATTERS -- S. E. Ruyle, came down from LaHarpe last
week, to sojourn with home folks a few weeks.
-- Mrs. P. L. Brown, was in Medora, from Wednesday until Friday,
visiting her mother, Mrs. Egleson, and sister, Mrs. Simpson. Her
niece, Reba Simpson, accompanied her home.
LORTONS PRAIRIE -- Mrs. Thomas Cain, of Weldon, is visiting her
sister, Mrs. V. T. Keller.
APPLE CREEK PRAIRID -- Ward McCollister has returned from
Madison, Wisconson, after spending the winter attending college.
WRIGHTSVILLE -- Louis Ebler, of East St. Louis, was here
Saturday evening and Sunday.
-- Miss Lizzie Bethard has been visiting her brother, Sylvester,
at Orleans for a few days.
PLEASANT DALE -- Rev. Wm. Turner, of Scottville, is visiting at
Daniel Otey's.
