Ceres Cemetery in Athensville
Located in Athensville Township, less than 1 mile south of the Morgan-Greene County line, west of U.S. Highway 67 and is on a hill south of Lick Creek. The brushy burial site is in Section 4 of Township 12 N Range 10 W.
This one-acre cemetery is located just north of the village of Ceres on Rt. 267 north of Greenfield. The first recorded burial was in 1844. At one time, there was a Grange Hall and a school in Ceres, as well as a small store. The cemetery, includes such surnames as Curtis, Harmon, Herron, Newingham, Phillips, Sorrells, Spencer, Strowmatt, Warrolls and Redman. Buried here are Civil War veteran Rev. Joseph Redman and his wife, who came from Virginia by way of Kentucky and Indiana, and who raised eight children in Greene County. --Gazette-Patriot, Carrollton, Thursday, August 28, 2003, "Greene County Days"
"I’m attaching two photos that I took the last time I was there. The big marker
is my ancestors Joseph and Nancy Redman. At the far right is the marker for
John Redman’s wife, Margaret. John was the son of Joseph and Nancy. What you
will see is that there appears to be the base of a few additional grave
markers in between Joseph/Nancy and Margaret. It is believed that at least
their son, Thomas (my 4th great grandfather) is also buried there.
"I found the broken up grave markers buried a few inches down of Laura Ann
Spencer, daughter of Margaret and her second husband, Elisha Spencer. I had
just seen one small piece and after finding the first, I used a small spoon
to prob the ground and found the other pieces. No one had this grave in
their records that I know of. Since she was born/died between census
records, no one knew of her. How sad." --Daniel Redmond
