Biography - Albro Allen
DR. ALBRO B. ALLEN is a native of Lincoln county, Missouri, where he was
born April 23d, 1840. He is the youngest child of Hon. Edwin and Jane Allen,
who had a family of seven children, and is of the fourth generation in
descent from a brother of Ethan Allen, of revolutionary fame, and the
celebrated hero of Ticonderoga. Hon. James Allen represented his district in
the lower house of congress one term, as the candidate of the whig party. He
acquitted himself with honor and distinction, and a well–merited
satisfaction to his constituents, figuring in the important events of that
period. His death occurred the year 1849. His widow is yet living, and
residing at Westford, Lincoln county, Missouri.
Dr. A. B. Allen received his literary education at Troy Seminary, Missouri, and at the age of seventeen commenced the study of medicine, under the instruction of Dr. William H. McPheters, of St. Louis. He attended lectures at the St. Louis Medical College in the winter of 1858-9, and during the following summer practiced and studied, and in the winter of 1859-60 he attended another course of lectures at the same medical school. At the expiration of the term, the college conferred on Mr. Allen the degree of M. D., and about the first of April, 1860, he located in the practice of his profession at Hamburg, Calhoun county, Illinois, and soon after entered into co-partnership with Hon. F. P. Rush, M. D., with whom he practiced about one year when, at the earnest solicitation of Judge Simpson and others, he removed to Gilead, in the same county. After remaining in the latter place about one year, he removed to Hardin, the county seat of Calhoun county, at which place he enjoyed a lucrative practice. While residing there, in 1863, he was married to Miss Juliet Kennedy, daughter of Rev. N. J. Kennedy. This union, however, was destined to be of short duration, for death had marked Mrs. Allen as an early victim, and on the 18th of April, in the year 1864, she departed this life, leaving her husband and an infant daughter. About one year after the death of his wife, Dr. Allen removed to Flint Hill, St. Charles county, Missouri, where he continued in the practice of his profession. While residing there, he was married to Miss Mollie Harnett, and soon after their marriage they removed to Council Bluffs, Iowa. Dr. Allen’s second wife was also an early victim of death, surviving her marriage only about seven months. After her death, the Doctor was united in marriage to Mrs. M. E. Revere, and soon after removed to Bourbon county, Kentucky, where he resided six months, and then returned to Hardin, Illinois. On the 14th of February, 1870, he located at Kane, Greene county, where he has since resided, in the enjoyment of a good practice.
In politics, Dr. Allen early became a supporter of the principles of the democratic party, casting his first vote for Stephen A. Douglas, when he was a candidate for president.
By his skill as a physician, Dr. Allen has won the esteem and confidence of a large circle of friends, and besides being an able healer of the sick, he is a genial, clever gentleman.
