Mrs. Kate M. Rainey, 73, WIDOW OF THE LATE JOHN RAINEY DIED AT HER HOME IN JERSEYVILLE. SHE WAS A DAU OF COL SAMUEL THOMAS, A PIONEER SETTLER OF GREENE CO, HAVING SETTLED SW OF THIS CITY NOV, 9, 1818. THE FAMILY WAS THE FIRST OF THE WHITE SETTLERS NORTH OF MACOUPIN CREEK IN GREENE CO. HE WAS BORN IN PENDLETON CO, S CAROLINA, SEPT 13, 1794 AND MARRIED ELIZABETH ISLEY,(BORN IN SULLIVAN CO, TENN, SEPT 2, 1796), JUNE 4, 1816. WHEN HE AND HIS WIFE ARRIVED AT THEIR LOG CABIN IN GREEN CO FROM WOOD RIVER IN WHAT IS NOW KNOWN AS MADISON CO, JOHN WAS THEIR ONLY CHILD. HE WAS A MAN OF REMARKABLE ABILITY AND WHILE HE WAS DEVELOPING THE WILD PRAIRIES, HAD MANY ENCOUNTERS WITH THE INDIANS, WHO THEN ROAMED THE COUNTRY. A NUMBER OF HIS REALITIES HAD BEEN SLAIN AT WOOD RIVER BY INDIANS AND HE HAD BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE DEPREDATIONS OF THOSE SAVAGES. HE WAS THE FATHER OF 12 CHILDREN, ALL OF WHOM ARE DEAD EXCEPT MRS MATILDA CLEMMONS, WIDOW OF THE LATE DR C P CLEMMONS, WHO NOW RESIDES IN CAL, AND MRS ELIZABETH CLEMMONS, WIDOW OF THE LATE JOHN CLEMMONS, NOW RESIDING NEAR VIRDEN, IN MACOUPIN CO. SAMUEL THOMAS BECAME PROMINENT IN GREENE CO AFFAIRS BEFORE HIS DEATH DEC 22, 1873. MRS KATE THOMAS WAS YOUNGEST OF 12 CHILDREN AND BORN ON THE OLD HOMESTEAD SW OF CARROLLTON MAY 3, 1838. SHE MARRIED JOHN RAINEY SEPT 9, 1859. JOHN RAINEY DIED APR 15, 1887, LEAVING HER AND 3 CHILDREN: HENRY T RAINEY RESIDING ON A FARM SW OF THIS CITY. SHE HAD RESIDED IN THIS COMMUNITY ALL HER LIFE AND WAS A MEMBER OF THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH. SHE HAD A GOOD MIND AND GREAT INTEREST IN PUBLIC AFFAIRS. SHE HAD SEEN THE WILD PRAIRIES OF GREEN CO DEVELOPED INTO OPULENCY, AND WAS ONE OF THE FEW REMAINING OF THE PIONEER FAMILIES OF GREEN CO. THE FUNERAL WAS FROM HER HOME ON SEPT 6.

HE WAS A MEMBER OF ST FRANCIS XAVIER CHURCH IN JERSEYVILLE, KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS NO 1996 IN CARROLLTON, MOOSE LODGE, AMERICAN LEGION AND VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS. HIS CAREER INCLUDED SERVING AS A COLLEGE TRACK COACH, AND A LENGTHY STINT IN THE AIR FORCE, WHERE HE ATTAINED THE RANK OF LT COLONEL. LATER HE WAS EMPLOYED 17 YRS IN THE PHYSICAL MEDICINE DEPT OF OWENS-ILL GLASS CO. Jacob Reddish, 85, BORN IN GRAYSON CO, KY SEPT 10, 1824, AND CAME TO ILL IN 1828 AND SETTLED IN MADISON CO. HE WAS DRIVEN OUT OF WHAT IS NOW KNOWN AS GRANITE CITY BY THE HIGH WATER OF 1844. HAVING LOST EVERYTHING HE CAME TO JERSEY CO PENNILESS AND SETTLED ON WHAT IS NOW KNOWN AS THE BARTON MORRISON FARM IN RICHWOODS TWSP. HE LIVED THERE FOR 10 YRS, THEN MOVED TO WHAT IS KNOW AS THE REDDISH HOMESTEAD NEAR REDDISH SCHOOL. IN 1875 HE BUILT THE HOME WHERE HE DIED IN FIELDON. ON MA1, 1846, HE MARRIED HANNA (WEEKS) REDDISH OF OHIO WHO SURVIVES. 12 CHILDREN WERE BORN TO THEM, 6 SON & 6 DAU. 9 DIED IN INFANCY. THREE SURVIVE: MARY, WIFE OF HENRY C HARMON, NANNIE, WIFE OF CHARLES H KIRBY, AND ZEDDOCK REDDISH, ALL LIVING IN RICHWOOD TWSP; 14 GRANDCHILDREN; 10G-GRANDCHILDREN; 2 G-G-GRANDCHILDREN. "UNCLE JAKE" WAS YOUNGEST OF 8 CHILDREN. THEY WERE BENJAMIN, STEPHEN, JOHN, ZEDDOCK, JACKSON, LETTIE, WIFE OF THE LATE GEORGE MEYERS OF CARROLLTON, TX, AND ELIZABETH, WIFE OF THE LATE LEWIS ELLIOT OF KEMPER, IL. THE REDDISH FAMILY IS OF IRISH STOCK, SETTLING IN VA, FROM THERE CAME WEST INTO KY, THEN INTO ILL. ON ACCOUNT OF THE DEATH OF HIS FATHER, WHEN HE WAS A SMALL BOY HE WENT TO MAKE HIS HOME WITH HIS OLDER BROS, STEPHEN AND ZEDDOCK. HE DID NOT RECEIVE A FULL MEASURE OF BOOK EDUCATION. HOWEVER HE POSSESSED THE CHARACTERISTICS OF WHICH WINNERS ARE MADE. HE SECURED HIS FINANCIAL START IN LIFE BY PLANTING POPCORN IN THE RAIL FENCE CORNERS ON HIS BROTHER'S FARM. WHEN A FEW YRS OLDER HE CUT CORDWOOD AND PLACED IT ON THE BANKS OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER FOR 50 CENTS A DAY. FROM THIS SMALL BEGINNING HE AMASSED ONE OF THE LARGEST FORTUNES IN JERSEY CO. ONE OF THE PIONEER CITIZENS OF THE CO, HIS HOSPITALITY KNEW NO BOUNDS. HIS FUNERAL WAS ONE OF THE LARGEST EVER HELD IN JERSEY CO. THE CROWD CONSUMED 30 MIN IN PASSING BY FOR A FINAL VIEW OF THE REMAINS. THE SERVICES WERE TO HAVE BEEN HELD SUN AFT, MAY 9, BUT WERE POSTPONED ON ACCOUNT OF A RAIN STORM, UNTIL MON. MR REDDISH HAVING MADE A SPECIAL REQUEST NOT TO BE BURIED IN A STORM. SERVICES BY REV I D CRAWFORD OF KANE. Mary Ruyle, 77, MOTHER OF SUPT THOMAS B RUYLE OF THE CO BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, DIED AT HER HOME NEAR KEMPER, WED JAN 17, 1906. SHE WAS THE WIDOW OF THOMAS B RUYLE. SHE WAS THE DAU OF AMOS & ELIZA PRUITT, AND WAS BORN 3 MILES NORTH OF CARROLLTON, IN GREENE CO, FEB 13, 1828. THOMAS WAS A NATIVE OF TENN AND CAME TO MORGAN CO ILL WHEN 7 YRS OLD, HE MOVED TO JERSEY CO IN 1832. MARY AND THOMAS SETTLED, AFTER THEIR MARRIAGE, IN RUYLE TWSP WHERE THEY LIVED THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. THEY WERE THE PARENTS OF 12 CHILDREN: AMOS L, CHARLES, DECEASED, LUCINDA J, ELIZA E, MARY, CELIA, THOMAS B, GEORGE W, HENRY, DECEASED, ANNIE AND 2 SONS WHO DIED IN INFANCY. THEY WERE OF THAT CLASS OF EARLY INFLUENTIAL SETTLERS WHOSE PERSISTENT PATIENCE, TRUE STURDY MANHOOD AND WOMANHOOD AND FRUITFUL AND SUBSTANTIAL CITIZENSHIP HAVE CONTRIBUTED GENEROUSLY TO THE PROGRESSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF JERSEY CO AND RUYLE TWSP. THE DEMISE OF THOMAS B RUYLE SR WAS KEENLY FELT AS IS THE DEATH NOW OF MRS RUYLE, BY THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY. A FAITHFUL WIFE, A GOOD MOTHER, A TRUE HIGHLY ESTEEMED CITIZEN AND A CHARITABLE AND LOYAL CHRISTIAN, HAS ENDED HER LIFE WORK AND PASSED OVER THE RIVER WHILE HER LOVED ONES MOURN HER GOING. SHE LEAVES TO MOURN THEIR LOSS 8 CHILDREN, 22 GRANDCHILDREN, 18 G-GRANDCHILDREN AND MANY OTHER RELATIVES AND FRIENDS. ALL HER CHILDREN WERE AT HER BEDSIDE AT THE TIME OF DEATH. MRS RUYLE WAS FAMILIARLY KNOWN AS "GRANDMA RUYLE" AND HAD BEEN A MEMBER OF KEMPER BAPTIST CHURCH EVER SINCE IT WAS ORGANIZED IN 1876. "GRANDMA" IN HER HAS SICKNESS SAID: "I AM PREPARED AND READY TO GO AND MEET THOSE WHO HAVE GONE BEFORE." FUNERAL SERVICES CONDUCTED BY REV WM GAITHER, WERE HELD AT KEMPER BAPTIST CHURCH. INTERMENT WAS IN DELAWARE CEM.
